You will work particularly on medium and large technological items. You will hold a recognised professional qualification, preferably in conservation, although this could be in a relevant technological discipline, provided that you have proven work experience relating to the conservation and treatment of engineering and technological items. You will have a good practical understanding of materials and treatments, and you should be able to show evidence of expanding your knowledge of these. You will be aware of professional conservation issues and best practice. You will be expected to work towards PACR Accreditation. You will be adept at problem solving, able to manage your time and work, alone or with others, to meet deadlines, and will have good communication and ICT skills.This post will involve occasional working at heights and a degree of manual handling. You may undertake work at any of the NMS sites and a driving licence is desirable.

You will be responsible for the management of the Middle East and South Asia section and the curation of its collections, which include the decorative arts and ethnography from the Middle East, particularly Iran and Turkey, as well as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and South East Asia. You will lead, manage and participate in the research activities of the section – which cover not only the artistic aspects of the subject, but also the social impact and cultural significance of material culture – and will be expected to apply personal expertise to one of its specialist areas. In addition to your overall section responsibilities, you will be directly involved in helping to develop and deliver the new permanent World Cultures Galleries within the Royal Museum Project, for 2011. In this capacity, you will be required to research and interpret collections, harnessing your expertise, but equally working across the whole breadth of the World Cultures collections, in order to lead on, and contribute to, the detailed development of some of the interdisciplinary gallery concepts.
You will have a degree/postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, plus proven relevant work experience; a postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies or equivalent is desirable. An excellent communicator with proven research and publication skills, you will be organised, methodical, adept at problem solving, a team worker and a good thinker. You will have experience in managing staff and projects, and will have good ICT skills. A driving licence is desirable.
